Make The Most of Your Green Space

If you are like me and are fortunate to have a green space, no matter how small, capitalize on it! Yard clean up is right around the corner, and one thing I don’t do is bag the leaves from last Fall. First it keeps them out of the land fill, and the leaves are beneficial to the grass. Now, the first mow of the year the leaves do get chopped up, but at least I am not bagging them!

The next item on my the list (see the Arriving Soon: Spring article) is to plant some trees this year. Years ago in our small town, we had an epidemic of the Emerald Ash Borer Beetle and we lost a lot of trees in our town. In our yard alone we lost three trees. The city replaced two of them and we have planted eight, but I have been wanting to plant another tree on the west side of our yard. The big dilemma is what kind of tree to get? I’m thinking some kind of Evergreen to have some green all year round. Once I decide, I want to plant it this Spring. Trees help improve air quality and the health of your yard and also provide shade. Providing shaded areas helps provide cooler air for our planet. And I sure do miss not having any shade on the western side of the yard!

If you don’t have your own green space, such as if you live in an apartment, you can still make your own green space! Add pot plants to your window sill or balcony and get creative with them. I love getting ideas on things like this by walking around my nearest garden stores, parks and neighborhoods in the spring. One of the great things about your garden store is that, in addition to wonderful ideas, they will have everything you need to create what you like!
